How to ask your employer to sponsor an Executive MBA

A good request is a business proposal, not a plea for education funding. Show the problem you will solve, the time the programme takes away from work, the expected workplace output and the terms you are willing to accept.

Four sponsorship structures

  • Full sponsorship: employer pays tuition and approved travel, usually with a service agreement.
  • Partial sponsorship: employer covers a fixed amount or percentage while you fund the balance.
  • Reimbursement: you pay first and receive instalments after passing each term or remaining employed.
  • Time-only support: no fee funding, but approved class leave, flexible hours and capstone access.

One-page business case

  1. Current business need: name one measurable team or company problem.
  2. Programme fit: map two or three modules to that problem.
  3. Work output: propose a project, dashboard, process or market plan you will deliver.
  4. Time plan: list every class, immersion and examination that touches working hours.
  5. Funding ask: state the amount, payment timing and tax documentation needed.
  6. Risk control: offer progress reports, knowledge-sharing and reasonable retention terms.

Read the fine print before signing

  • What repayment is triggered by resignation, termination or a failed subject?
  • Does the amount decline monthly or remain fully repayable until the end?
  • Who owns a capstone built with company data or intellectual property?
  • What happens when the institute reschedules a module?
  • Is approved leave paid, unpaid or deducted from annual leave?
